Saturday Suggestion: Be Present.

Many of us keep our phones and cameras at the ready all through the day. When I saw the cute Santa hats on the geese in the Bozeman airport last night, of course, I took a photo.

My daughter was supposed to arrive at the Helena airport last night at midnight on a connecting flight out of Seattle. She had already spent several hours at the airport when she found out her flight to Montana was
cancelled.  UGH.

Fortunately, she immediately contacted a ticket agent, and they managed to get her on another flight to Bozeman, also arriving at midnight. Despite the road trip and not getting home until 2 am, we were thankful we didn't have to wait another day. Alaska Airlines provided her with a very nice apology and a discount for her next flight. This is the sort of service all airlines should offer when our travel plans are inconvenienced but sadly is not always the case.

The picture below, however, has made me think about my compulsive documentation of life.

When I saw a photo posted on Facebook by Things That Matter, I knew it was the perfect Saturday Suggestion to share on this blog. The way the older woman in the photo seems to be experiencing the pure joy of the moment is a reminder I am going to try to keep in mind this holiday season, as I spend precious time with family and friends.

If we'd been sleeping, we would have missed this!

Returning home in the wee hours last night, we were treated to a majestic site. A herd of about 30 elk (cows and calves!) were bedding down near our property. Our car lights must have spooked them; they all began to move and then to run across the road, up the drive and over the hill behind our house. If you have never seen an elk, I cannot begin to describe how massive they are, especially when seen up close.

I would have snapped a photo - but it was far too dark. I wish I could share the sight of them with you - but it will live forever in my memory. And I got to enjoy every second of watching them, instead of fumbling with my phone and wondering if the flash was on or off.

Have a wonderful holiday season - and (as Things That Matter said) "be present."

This post may be linked to one of the great link-up parties I follow and list on my blog. Check them out!

Note to self: be present. :)

  2. What a great picture Susan. We have all become obsessed with taking pictures it's true. Even I who don't have a fancy camera or phone, try not to go out without the camera when I go for a walk. We have become such a visual society. I'm going to shut down for a while and enjoy the holidays. I wish you a Merry Christmas!

  4. Glad Emma made it home. I do think the Bozeman airport is pretty nice. Much longer to get there than ours, though. The elk probably made the whole trip worth it -- not to mention the smile I can imagine on Emma's face when she saw you! Have a wonderful Christmas.

  5. Such a timely post for me, Susan. My son is flying home tonight, arriving at 12:22 AM all going well. I can only hope the airport has such festive scenery such as the flying festive geese. I can just imagine how wondrous it was seeing the elk. Wow. And that gem of a photo you included of the phone clutching crowd with the serene gal is a treasure. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that the time with your friends and family passes oh-so-very-slowly.

So glad your daughter made it in safely and hope that your holidays are lovely. I put the phone away and dropped social media all together the last week and it was GLORIOUS!!
