Pearls - but not from an oyster!
I just found a type of pearls I really like - German pearls! I'm not talking about the kind that come out of oysters. I am referring to a website I was lucky enough to find yesterday, at the linkup party, Foodie FriDIY. The name of the blog is .... German Pearls! The pearls of the website are not jewelry. They are “pearls” of information, to help non tech-type people - like me! The blogger, Amy, is a self-professed “tech-geek,” and she writes posts with “tips and tricks for using your computer, smart phones and more.” Her site is (I think) fairly new, but she has already posted quite a few excellent articles that are worth spending some time reading.
Amy provides "Tech tips for non-tech types"
The first post of Amy's that I discovered was Help Me Find My iPhone! Update these Settings Now to Find Your iPhone Later. I felt confident that I had already enabled thelocator feature on my phone, but decided to use her test to see if I had done it all correctly.
I was shocked, when the name and number of someone I barely know (named Anna) appeared as the owner of my iPhone 5s! Anna and I once served on a committee together, and I occasionally still see her, but haven't really talked to her in years. It would be quite a surprise if she got a call, letting her know that my missing phone had been found!
Siri couldn't figure out who I was!
So, why was this random person identified as the owner of my phone? I think I know. A useful feature on the iPhone is the verbal "intelligent virtual personal assistant" named Siri. When I first got the phone, Siri kept calling me by my husband’s name. (I think the account was registered to him, so at that point my husband was probably identified as the owner. I got tired of being called his name, so had quite a conversation with Siri trying to explain who I was! Siri finally agreed that I was not my husband (!) but then began to call me “Anna.” At that point I gave up, and Anna has been Siri's name for me ever since. Somehow, I must have selected this Anna from my contacts, as the identified owner of my phone.German Pearls to the rescue
It took me only about two minutes to clear up the entire misunderstanding with that helpful but confused voice (Siri) in my phone. The tutorial on German Pearls outlines step-by-step instructions for how to be sure contact information is in place. Anna will no longer get the call, if my phone is lost and found.Tech tips that are easy to follow
Amy's tutorials are all so clearly written that even someone as technologically challenged as I am can follow them. I now know some easy ways to extend the life of my cell phone battery. I really think her shortcuts for when I use my keyboard will save me time, and filling out forms on my iPhone is going to be a lot quicker now.Saturday Spotlight #19 |
Then, I hope you'll come back and tell me what you think!
Have a wonderful weekend!
